I've been having these on a much smaller scale with some friends for a couple of years. Lots of fun. I have extended it to the office - we now do a soup potluck every so often and vote who's is the best. The non cooks can bring a salad or bread from an artisan bread shop.

One of my favorite summer get togethers is a "make your own shish kabob" party. It's fun to hand out skewers and let people make and cook their own. A nice large pot of hot corn on the cob is a great side.

came across your bread and soup article through an oddly phrased google search and just had to make a suggestion regarding the dilemma of paper plates issue. In San Francisco seafood chowder is often served in a sourdough 'bread bowl' - basically a large sourdough bun hollowed out that is both the container for the soup as well as can be ripped and dipped... you could contemplate that as it is within your theme and in the end any uneaten bowls are composted or when thrown at least are fodder for birds on the landfill

just a thought :) christina

This is fantastic! I'm throwing a Soup party in a couple of weeks, so I did a google search and came upon your page. I love that people are out in the world making things like this happen.
Just to spread the word, here's what's happening in Atlanta (where I live). Every two weeks I throw a themed dinner party and invite my friends. It started as a group of about 8 people, but now there are 22 people on my Always-Invite-List. The rules are: Feel free to bring a guest but let me know ahead of time, please bring wine, and let me know whether you're coming so I can buy the right amount of food. We have the BEST time, and the new attendees end up coming back with THEIR friends. Sometimes things get a little crazy. One time we ended up with 27 people for a sit down dinner in my 900 sq foot apartment.
So, the next one is a Soup Party. Thanks for the great page! You've inspired me!

Hey Eric, that sounds like quite a sweet idea for a party you have there :) - might be something for me to try at a party sometime.

Have fun & all the best,

Friends of ours host a "soup night" every other week during the winter months. Folks show up in various waves - families with kids earlier - those without for the second shift. It's a great way to catch up with people you might not see on a regular basis - and meet some new friends too. I even put a webpage together for it a few years ago (I think this is the 3rd year?) tho the new schedule isn't in place...soupnight

Now that is what you can call "global" community spirit! Especially since the invites go out all over the country (and probably outside of it as well).

I could definitely see how an event like this in the Meyer home could be quite the festive occasion... and from the sounds of it I may have to see about trying to wheedle a few of the recipes out of folks... (pumpkin soup, Molly's matzoh...)

Thanks for sharing such a wonderful idea Eric...

Great idea! I've been known to whip up a large pot of ribollita for friends from time to time, and made my first batch of posole a few days ago. Making an event of it sounds like a rewarding experience.

Sounds very interesting. As students (which was only last year for me...), we would do things similar to this. Didn't usually invite the whole street, but would often tell people to bring along others they knew who the rest of us didn't already know. (To clarify, these weren't just excuses to booze up). Pancackes was a good one that some friends of mine did. I don't think we ever did soup, though I think it would be a fun thing to try.

You were supposed to help cook that pumpkin soup with me, Eric. And where are all the photos? My matzoh balls were pretty close to perfect. Get those pics to me and I'll Flickr them if you don't want to.

What a great party. And yes, I want to do one too. I tell everyone: Bread and Soup parties are the best.
